Is Your Electrical Panel Ready for the Holidays?
The holiday season is one of the most joyful times of year — and one of the most demanding on your home’s electrical system. From string lights and inflatable yard decorations to new appliances under the tree and space heaters running in every room, your panel quietly shoulders a much heavier load in November and December than it does the rest of the year.
For most homes, that’s fine. But for homes with an older or undersized panel, the holidays have a way of exposing problems that were just waiting to show up.
The good news? October is the perfect time to find out where you stand — before the tree goes up, before guests arrive, and before you’re dealing with a tripped breaker on Christmas Eve.
Why the Holidays Put Extra Strain on Your Panel
Think about everything that runs in your home between Thanksgiving and New Year’s:
- Strings of holiday lights, both inside and out
- Portable space heaters in bedrooms and living areas
- An electric oven running for hours during holiday meals
- New electronics, appliances, or kitchen gadgets that just came off a wish list
- Guests using devices and chargers throughout the house
Each of those draws power. If your panel was already running close to its limits before all of that got added, you’re going to feel it.
A 100-amp service — which was the standard in homes built before the 1980s — was designed for a much simpler electrical life than most of us live today. If your home is on that older 100-amp service and you’ve added central air conditioning, electric appliances, or even just a lot more gadgets over the years, it may already be overloaded on a quiet Tuesday. The holidays just turn up the volume.
Warning Signs Your Panel May Need an Upgrade
You don’t always need to be an electrician to notice when something’s off. Here are the signs homeowners most commonly describe before calling us:
Breakers that trip more than once in a while. An occasional tripped breaker usually isn’t a cause for alarm. But if you’re resetting the same breaker regularly, or multiple breakers are tripping in a short period, your panel is telling you it can’t keep up.
Flickering or dimming lights. If the lights dim when you turn on the microwave, run the dryer, or plug in a space heater, that’s a sign of voltage fluctuation — often tied to an overloaded panel or wiring that can’t handle the demand.
You’re still on a fuse panel or 100-amp service. If your home has a fuse box instead of circuit breakers, it almost certainly predates modern electrical needs. The same goes for homes still on 100-amp service. Both are worth evaluating before the holidays.
You have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel. These brands — common in homes built from the 1950s through the 1980s — have well-documented reliability concerns. If you’re not sure whether you have one, a licensed electrician can check in minutes.
You’re about to add something big. Planning to charge a new electric vehicle, install a hot tub, or add a generator hookup? Those require dedicated circuits and sometimes a panel upgrade to do safely.
Why Fall Is the Right Time to Think About This
There are two practical reasons October makes sense.
First, our schedule tends to open up a bit in the fall. The summer rush settles down, and we can typically get to you faster and with more flexibility than we can in the peak of winter.
Second — and more importantly — upgrading a panel takes planning. If an assessment shows your home needs work, you want that done in October or early November, not the week before Thanksgiving. Getting ahead of it gives you time to do it right and go into the holidays with confidence instead of crossed fingers.
What a Panel Upgrade Actually Involves
A panel upgrade typically means replacing your existing panel with a new 200-amp service, which is the current standard for most homes. We prefer Square D Homeline panels for their reliability and quality.
The job includes pulling the proper permits, coordinating with your utility company for a brief service interruption, and completing a full inspection once the work is done. Most panel upgrades for a single-family home are completed in a day.
We also include a full electrical system assessment with every service call — so while we’re there, we’ll check your GFCI protection, smoke detectors, surge protection, and anything else worth knowing about. You’ll leave the conversation with a clear picture of where your home stands.
Start with a $47 Assessment
We know “should I upgrade my panel?” isn’t always an easy question to answer on your own. That’s exactly what our $47 electrical assessment is for.
One of our licensed electricians will come out, evaluate your panel and overall system, and give you an honest answer. If we find that an upgrade makes sense, the $47 is credited toward the job. If your panel is in good shape and there’s nothing to worry about, you’ll know that too — and that’s worth something on its own.
We’ve earned over 200 five-star reviews from homeowners across Montgomery County and the surrounding area by being straight with people. We’d rather give you peace of mind than a proposal you don’t need.
